My Knight Awaits

Picture courtesy of Liv Elin Eriksen deviantart

Today I face a battle against a foe I cannot see nor hear and yet, as I stand alone on the parapet that looks out across the pre-dawn land, instinctively I know my knight is there...

I may not see him in the cold, thick mist,  nor hear the sound of hoof beats thundering from his black charger, but he is there, waiting, watching, ready for anything if need be...

Tis courage that I need, and courage that he offers, tis strength that I might seek, then it is his strength I can tap into should dark rainclouds gather overhead...

My knight is out there, hidden and yet watching quietly from just beyond the trees in the shadow of the falls, waiting until the time comes when I reach out, call to him in my happiness or my pain...

I can feel the warmth of his hand slip into mine, and suddenly he is here, right beside me, draping his heavy blue velvet cloak round my bare shoulders, gathering me into his arms...

From out of nowhere he has found me, crushing me tightly to his chest to ward off  whatever demons plague my mind, whatever the outcome, he is here beside me to keep me safe and sound...

Many tears have I shared with him, many secrets great and small, yet never once has he beleaguered me
nor mocked my thoughts and emotions as nonsensical absurdities...

We keep each others secrets well, and I know my heart is in his hands and his in mine, he tilts my face up to his to kiss me tenderly, a kiss that says a multitude of things, speaks silent words for which no words are needed...

Our lips part and his eyes meet mine, green like the forest below, penetrating, looking deep within my mind and soul, capturing the very essence of me, knowing instinctively what I need most...

'I will wait an eternity, Milady.' is what he says, before another impassioned kiss is emblazoned on my lips, 'Though not with you in form today, tis my heart, mind, body and soul that I send with you...'

'Tis the courage of eternity which gives you strength. Tis the wisdom of the ages that will guide you, and tis my undying love that shall surround you no matter what the day may bring.'

And then quickly, silently, he is gone, back into the mist, back to wait in the shadow by the falls, I hear hoof beats echo in the distance, though I know I face this day with trepidation his love and courage I will carry in my hands...

It is as if we can see one another through the mist of two worlds, two dimensions, standing here on the parapet I see him as clearly as ever, and he can hear my words carry on the winds...

He will await as promised, for his heart is pure and true, and when my battle is over he will be waiting here with a warm smile, a sweet kiss and soft, understanding eyes to comfort me...

He will not banter foolishly nor act as if my emotions were but second best, he may not even speak at all, but instead be content just hold me in his arms and stroke his fingers through my hair...

But for now he waits, hidden in the shadows, yet senses keen and wary, he will keep the hounds of hell at bay  today and watch for dragons too, my castle will be kept safe until my return...

My knight awaits, I can feel his strength surround me like an invisible suit of armor, impenetrable, safe and secure, and yet filled with a warm muskiness that is his scent alone, it makes me smile...

I tuck his love and courage into a pocket closest to my heart, but as I turn to leave the parapet I hesitate, taking out a pressed flower from the book I carry and let it drift away into the whispery air...

Somewhere down in the valley below, he will look up unexpectedly and catch the delicate gift between his fingers as it floats down to him carried on the morning mist, and he will know...

Without words, he will know my thoughts and I will know his, this small gesture will mean everything to him, and memories long forgotten will lap upon the warm shores of his mind...

He will smile and look around, struggling to catch a glimpse of me through the forest canopy, but I will be gone, so he will tuck the gift into a pocket closest to his heart as if it were a piece of gold...

And the memories that we both shared so long ago will once again bind us and keep us close, safe from harm, like a thick length of rope between his heart and mine...

As my knight awaits...
